Dakar Rally motorcycle gear: safety and equipment for extreme conditions

The Dakar Rally is one of the most challenging motorcycle sports events in the world. Long special stages, sand, dust, heat, significant temperature changes, and the risk of falls place exceptional demands not only on the motorcycle but also on the rider's protective gear.

Therefore, Dakar rider gear is not just a standard motocross kit. Here, the entire system is important – helmet, airbag, chest and back protectors, boots, apparel, goggles, and the proper compatibility of all elements.

Let's look at what safety solutions were relevant in the 2025 Dakar Rally and what ordinary motorcyclists can adapt from the professional equipment.

Airbag system – an essential part of Dakar motorcycle equipment

One of the most important elements of modern rally-raid protection is the motorcycle airbag system.

In the Dakar motorcycle category, airbags are not just an optional extra. Organizers state that an approved airbag system has been mandatory since 2021. From 2024, the system used must allow for two deployments, and in the 2025 Dakar rules, a suitable airbag system was mandatory.

The purpose of such a system is to additionally protect the motorcyclist's body during a fall and reduce the consequences of a severe impact.

Dakar participants also have specific requirements for spare airbag cartridges, so that the system can be prepared for use again after deployment.

Back and chest protectors

The 2025 FIM Dakar rules mandated compulsory back and chest protection.

Back protectors must comply with EN 1621-2 requirements, and chest protectors with EN 1621-3. The rules also define permissible protection levels.

This is a good reminder for everyday motorcyclists as well: the space in a jacket for a back protector is not the same as the back protector itself.

When buying motorcycle apparel, it is worth checking what protectors are actually included in the set and what standards they meet.

What about neck protection?

Here it is important to dispel a rather common misconception.

The 2025 Dakar rules state that a neck brace is not compatible with the airbag system used, and therefore cannot be used.

Thus, it cannot be said that neck protection was mandatory or particularly emphasized for Dakar motorcyclists in 2025.

This also demonstrates an important principle: individual protections must function as a coordinated system. More protective elements do not always mean better protection if they interfere with each other's operation.

Hand, elbow, knee, and hip protectors

FIM rules recommend protection for limb joints – knees, hips, elbows, and shoulders. If used, they must comply with the EN 1621-1:2012 Level 1 or Level 2 standard.

In rally-raid conditions, protectors must withstand not only potential impacts but also long hours of movement on the motorcycle.

Therefore, not only the level of protection is important. Protection must:

  • fit properly;
  • not shift while riding;
  • not restrict movement;
  • be compatible with the rest of the apparel;
  • remain comfortable for a long time.

Helmet in the Dakar Rally

A rally-raid helmet must cope with rather contradictory requirements.

It must provide the necessary protection, but at the same time be light enough and well-ventilated, as the motorcyclist wears the helmet for many hours in difficult conditions.

In recent years, FIM has also tightened the requirements for rally-raid helmets, transitioning from the older ECE 22.05 homologation to newer standards.

In practice, it is important to evaluate not only the helmet's homologation but also:

  • weight;
  • ventilation;
  • field of vision;
  • compatibility with MX goggles;
  • proper size;
  • stability at higher speeds.

MX goggles and visibility

In Dakar conditions, the question of a helmet visor is often replaced by motocross-type goggles.

Sand and dust mean that good visibility becomes not only a matter of comfort but also safety.

Goggles must fit snugly with the helmet, ensure sufficient ventilation, and protect the eyes from dust and small particles.

For the everyday enduro or motocross rider, this is also an area where it is not worth choosing based solely on design.

Rally-raid motorcyclist boots

Dakar motorcyclist boots must protect the foot, ankle, and calf from impacts, the motorcycle, and terrain influences.

FIM rules stipulate that boots used must be in good condition and made of leather or other materials with equivalent properties.

When choosing enduro or motocross boots, it is worth evaluating:

  • ankle stabilization;
  • calf protection;
  • sole construction;
  • fastener reliability;
  • impact resistance;
  • compatibility with knee protectors.

Why is ventilation so important in Dakar?

Protection must work not only during a fall.

Dakar motorcyclists experience high physical exertion for long periods in high temperatures, so overheating and fatigue also become a safety concern.

Therefore, rally-raid apparel relies on:

  • well-ventilated materials;
  • airflow;
  • lightweight construction;
  • freedom of movement;
  • proper layering.

Professional sports equipment clearly demonstrates why, when choosing motorcycle apparel, one should not judge solely by the thickness of its protectors.

Comfort during long rides is also part of safety.

Is Dakar equipment relevant for the average motorcyclist?

Most motorcyclists do not need Dakar-specification equipment.

However, the principles used in professional rally-raid sports are very relevant in everyday life:

Choose certified protectors. It's not enough for a part to merely look like protection.

Apparel must fit properly. A misplaced protector may not fulfill its purpose.

All equipment must be compatible. Helmets, goggles, body armor, airbags, and other protectors must not interfere with each other.

Consider riding conditions. Motocross, adventure, touring, and urban motorcyclists need different solutions.

Don't forget ventilation and comfort. Especially when riding for long periods or on hot days.

Dakar safety technologies are also making their way into everyday motorcycling

Airbag systems are a good example of how technologies used in professional sports are becoming increasingly relevant for ordinary motorcyclists.

Dakar organizers use airbag systems as one of the main safety measures for motorcyclists and continue to collaborate with FIM and manufacturers to improve their performance and comfort.

This does not mean that every motorcyclist needs to copy the Dakar participant's gear set.

However, the main lesson is clear: a well-chosen protection system must match the actual riding style, be certified, and function as a unified whole.
