Cardo pasikalbėjimo įranga: kaip išsirinkti tinkamą modelį?

Cardo intercom system: how to choose the right model?

When riding a motorcycle, communication equipment allows you to stay in touch with your passenger or other motorcyclists, listen to navigation instructions and music, and, depending on the model, use other phone functions.

One of the most well-known manufacturers in this category is Cardo Systems, offering communication devices for motorcyclists designed for different needs.

However, when choosing Cardo, it's not enough to just look at the price. Different models can vary in communication technology, group size, operating range, speakers, and additional features.

Why is motorcycle intercom equipment needed?

A communication device mounted in a helmet can be used for several main functions.

For communicating with other motorcyclists

When riding in pairs or in a group, you can stay in touch without stopping or using a phone.

This is especially convenient for informing others about:

  • a stop;
  • a change of route;
  • refuelling;
  • an obstacle on the road;
  • a group member falling behind.

For communicating with a passenger

The rider and passenger can communicate via devices installed in separate helmets.

This is much more comfortable than trying to talk over the wind and helmet noise.

For navigation

By connecting your phone, you can hear navigation app instructions directly in your helmet.

This allows for less distraction from looking at the phone screen.

For music and phone functions

Depending on the specific model and phone, you can listen to music, answer calls, or use voice control functions.

Bluetooth and Mesh – what's the difference?

This is one of the most important things when choosing motorcycle communication equipment.

Cardo models, depending on the series, can use either Bluetooth intercom or the more advanced Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC) technology.

Bluetooth intercom

Bluetooth connectivity is perfect for simpler situations – for example, communication between a rider and passenger or a few motorcyclists.

Devices are paired with each other and maintain communication in a set way.

For simpler needs, this may be completely sufficient.

Dynamic Mesh Communication

DMC is designed for more convenient communication in a group of motorcyclists.

The main advantage of the Mesh principle is that the network can dynamically adapt to the group.

If one motorcyclist briefly moves away from the group and then returns to the communication range, a compatible system can restore their connection to the group without the kind of manual switching that might be required in simpler Bluetooth configurations.

This is especially useful when riding in a larger group of motorcyclists.

Does everyone need Mesh?

No.

If you usually ride:

  • alone;
  • with a passenger;
  • with one other motorcyclist,

a simpler Bluetooth model may be completely sufficient.

If you regularly travel in a larger group, a DMC-enabled model becomes much more meaningful.

Therefore, buying the most expensive Cardo just because it has Mesh is not necessary if you won't actually use this feature.

Cardo Spirit series

Cardo Spirit is focused on simpler communication needs.

It's a rational choice for a motorcyclist whose main priorities are:

  • phone connectivity;
  • navigation instructions;
  • music;
  • communication with another motorcyclist or passenger.

The Spirit series can be a good first communication device if you don't need Mesh functionality for a large group of motorcyclists.

Cardo Freecom series

The Cardo Freecom series is a higher-end Bluetooth communication solution.

Depending on the specific model, Freecom devices can be designed for communication among several motorcyclists and have more features than the basic Spirit models.

This is a suitable choice for motorcyclists who want better functionality but do not necessarily need DMC group communication.

Cardo Packtalk series

Packtalk is a Cardo series most focused on advanced group communication.

Its main difference is DMC technology.

Packtalk is worth considering if:

  • you often ride in a group of motorcyclists;
  • you want Mesh communication;
  • convenient group communication is important to you;
  • you are looking for a higher-end Cardo system.

The functions of specific Packtalk models vary, so it's important to compare their relevant versions before purchasing.

What does "Duo" mean?

Some Cardo models can be purchased in Single or Duo kits.

Single usually means one communication device.

Duo kits contain two devices ready for use together.

Duo can be a practical choice for:

  • a rider and a passenger;
  • two motorcyclists riding together.

However, it's always worth checking the specific contents of the kit before purchasing.

Speakers – an important part of the system

The quality of communication equipment depends not only on the communication technology.

How sound is transmitted in the helmet is also important.

Different Cardo models use different speakers, and some higher-end kits use JBL audio solutions.

However, larger or higher-end speakers do not always automatically mean a better result in every helmet.

Sound quality is greatly influenced by:

  • speaker position relative to the ears;
  • internal helmet construction;
  • wind noise;
  • motorcycle aerodynamics;
  • riding speed.

Therefore, proper speaker positioning is very important when installing a communication system.

Is Cardo suitable for every helmet?

Many communication systems can be installed in helmets from various manufacturers, but it's not equally convenient in every helmet.

Before purchasing, check:

  • if there is space for speakers in the helmet;
  • if the microphone can be properly installed;
  • if the external module can be securely attached;
  • if the speakers will not press against the ears;
  • if the specific helmet does not have a dedicated integrated communication system.

Some helmets have factory-designated spaces for communication equipment, making installation easier.

Microphone selection

Depending on the helmet type, different microphones can be used.

For a full-face helmet, a wired microphone attached inside the helmet is often convenient.

For a modular or open-face helmet, a microphone on a flexible boom can be used.

The specific kit depends on the chosen Cardo model, so it's worth checking which microphones are included before purchasing.

Weather resistance

Motorcycle communication equipment is used outdoors, so resistance to rain and other weather conditions is important.

Cardo uses weather-resistant designs in its devices, but it's always worth checking the specific model's resistance characteristics in its specifications.

This is especially relevant for motorcyclists who travel a lot and ride regardless of the weather.

Battery life

The battery life of different Cardo models varies.

It also depends on usage:

  • intercom conversations;
  • music;
  • phone;
  • communication technology;
  • ambient temperature;
  • device age.

If you often embark on all-day trips, battery life and charging options should be one of your selection criteria.

Communication range – not an absolute number

Manufacturers specify a maximum communication range for their equipment, but in real-world conditions, it can be shorter.

Communication is affected by:

  • terrain;
  • buildings;
  • forest;
  • turns;
  • traffic;
  • position of other motorcyclists;
  • electromagnetic environment.

Therefore, the maximum distance indicated in the specification should be considered as the manufacturer's stated maximum result under suitable conditions, rather than a guaranteed range for every trip.

How to choose a Cardo?

The simplest way to start is with your actual usage.

I ride mostly alone

Navigation, music, and phone functions may be the most important. A basic model will often suffice.

I ride with a passenger

A reliable two-device intercom is needed. Consider a Duo kit.

We ride in pairs or a small group

A higher-end Bluetooth system can be an optimal choice for price and features.

We regularly ride in a larger group

Then it's worth looking at Packtalk and DMC-enabled models.

No need to buy the most expensive model

This is the most important practical conclusion.

If you ride alone and use Cardo only for music and navigation, a top-of-the-line group communication system may be unnecessary.

Conversely, if you regularly travel with a larger group of motorcyclists, saving money and choosing a basic model may lead to a lack of essential features later on.

Therefore, choose not based on the model's position in the Cardo product hierarchy, but based on how you actually ride your motorcycle.
